Poolewe Salmon-rich River Ewe flows into the head of Loch Ewe at Poolewe after its short course from Loch Maree. Poolewe lies near the 58th parallel, a latitude further north than Moscow and features a remarkable collection of tropical and sub-tropical plants which thrive in the gardens of Inverewe House. The gardens were created by Osgood MacKenzie over 100 years ago. Click on thumbnail for full image The success of the gardens lies in the warm sea currents which come to shore in the vicinity of Poolewe and as a result, there is a local micro-climate that is considerably warmer than one would expect. The area experiences less frost than elsewhere along the coastline and this is clearly highlighted by the extensive range of unusual plants grown in the gardens. |
